What portion of the population knows calculus?
Dosing insulin is a non-linear problem that requires an understanding of calculus and advanced graph theory. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the population never took these subjects in school.  Even if they had, applying calculus and advanced graph theory to solve the practical complexities of insulin dosing is something with which many engineers would struggle initially. 

The average person with diabetes has little hope of managing their condition well.
